HISTORY: RIGHT ANKLE PAIN – STATUS POST TRAUMA WITH RIGHT LOWER LEG – ANKLE ECCYMOSIS AND SOFT TISSUE SWELLING
COMPARISON: None
TECHNIQUE: Multiplanar images of the right ankle were obtained at 1.5 Tesla without IV contrast
FINDINGS:
BONES: There are degenerative joint changes of the anterior and posterior subtalar joins and of the talonavicular joint. There are spurs of the calcaneus, at the insertion of the Achilles tendon and the origin of the plantar faxia. There is bone marrow edema along the posterior margin of the calcaneus. No acute bony injury.
TENDONS: There is a complete rupture of the distal Achilles tendon at it’s calcaneal insertion, retracted superiorly x 4 cm. The plantaris tendon is torn as well. The other flexor and extensor tendons are intact.
LIGAMENTS: No evidence of ligament rupture is seen. The collateral ligaments are intact.
SOFT TISSUES: There is fluid in the defect of the distal Achilles tendon rupture. No other localized mass or fluid collection.
IMPRESSION: Complete rupture of the distal Achilles tendon, avulsed from its calcaneal insertion and retracted proximally x 4 cm.
